Keepers of the
Salish Sea

This was a new play with a brand-new theatre company, based on the playwright’s personal experience as an Indigenous person who immigrated to Vancouver. I served as the prop, set, and costume designer on the production, coordinating across all three departments.
My central concept was rooted in the main character’s connection to water and trees as sources of home and grounding. This led me to build a design language centered on raw lumber, alongside a consistent palette of blues and greens that remained present throughout the piece.
One of the primary challenges was designing a traditional Coast Salish canoe that was both tourable and maneuverable within our stage space. This required multiple iterations and close collaboration with Indigenous artists and elders to ensure the final piece was culturally respectful and cohesive.
The production received a Jessie Award for Outstanding Incorporation of Indigenous Art.
