The director had a strong vision and concept for this design. She had the blocking set before I began designing, so fitting stairs, a and a porch into one level was challenging. I decided to make the silhouette of the set angular to mimic a split level ranch of the 1960's to accommodate the layout. The director also wanted to make a clear statement that it took both our female and male characters roles and responsibilities to make the marriage work, and so we stylized their "spaces" with color choices and color blocking. Finally, we wanted to have the set look like it was a staged sitcom on a studio set, and so the black of the stage floor and walls were left around the edges, and all lighting was left exposed.
